VBH and Meck county Park & Rec have once again partnered for Volunteer projects in the Parks,
Expectation: “Connecting veterans (in transition) with the community, with corporate groups and employment opportunities, and with each other.
March 12 – Freedom Park – we’ll plan to gather by the volleyball courts and go from there. Frederick will let us know what we’ll expect to accomplish, and any areas to be avoided. Even if dredging is in progress at the lake, there’s plenty of other territory to cover.
April 9 – Revolution Park –
April 17 We will have a big project based at Camp Greene on for EarthShare Charlotte.
May 14 – Veterans Park/ Thompson Park – wherever the need is greatest; and if the response is robust we can plan on both.
Plan to begin each date at 8:30am, building in time at the beginning for introductions and talking about our “Why” for these events; and We will take time from about 11:30-12:00 for intentional connections between the organizations sending Volunteers (representatives) and veterans in transition who are seeking employment. Either or both of these engagement periods will include information about employment with Park & Recreation and/or other County/City Departments (ex. Storm Water Services, etc.)
What to bring/wear:
- Wear long pants and long sleeves, for protection from scratches and/or poison ivy.
- Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes – REQUIRED, NO sandals or flip-flops. Wear OLDER shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, wet or muddy.
- Wear heavy-duty work gloves – bring your own gloves for health and safety.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen for protection from sun exposure; and bring your own preferred mosquito/insect repellant.
- Bring and wear a face covering when in the vicinity of other people.
- Maintain physical distance of at least 6 feet (2 arm-lengths) from other people.
- Bring your own water in a large, refillable water bottle; to stay hydrated, avoid the need to refill, and to protect the environment from single-use plastic bottles.
We typically rotate between Freedom Park (big groups!), Veterans Park (best for 20-30), Camp Greene Park (big groups, potential for partnering with CharMeck Storm Water and/or Keep Charlotte Beautiful), and Thompson Park (smaller group, usually right before Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day). Projects vary according to the needs in the parks.
