Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches participants about mental health and substance abuse issues.

What to expect: This basic course on mental health and substance abuse conditions will give you the skills to notice and engage individuals experiencing these symptoms which cause suffering. Through engagement, you can offer understanding and invite them to expand their care team with resources that can help. You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of this course. This course is foundational and part of the training curriculum for NCServes Providers & Staff, Peer Supports, and Community Stakeholders. Class will be limited to 30 people, who will be invited to join the monthly veteran luncheon on site (exception to normal location) at no cost.
Trainers:
Carol Senick, MPA is a Community Education and Outreach Specialist for Alliance Health. She obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She has worked in the behavioral health field for 17 years. During this time she has provided trainings on various behavioral health and physical health topics to service recipients, the community at large, law enforcement and various community stakeholders. Additionally, Carol is a nationally certified Mental Health First Aid and Question Persuade and Refer facilitator.
Chris Sherrill, MA is a Senior Community Management Professional at Humana Healthy Horizons™ of South Carolina who educates and builds the visibility of Humana’s Medicaid products and services throughout communities in Upstate South Carolina via social media, community events, and interactions while also working within communities to promote suicide awareness/prevention, reduce the stigma of mental illness, and addiction to effect change. As a former sitting member of the North Carolina Governor’s and Mayor’s Challenge, he is transitioning to the South Carolina Governor’s and Mayor’s Challenge to prevent suicide among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families, as well as, an active contributor at community based mental health forums. After spending over 24 years in the U. S. Marine Corps, 3 years as a sheriff’s deputy, and 2 years working in the school system, Chris believes establishing relationships, community education, and cooperation are vital to building resilient communities.
Chris is a certified trainer in QPR Suicide Prevention, QPR for First Episode Psychosis, Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention, Mental Health First Aid, Substance Use Disorders (Addiction), Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit, and Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs) facilitator, as well as, a Certified Peer Support Specialist. He was named “2020 Instructor of the Year” for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crisis Intervention Team Training and is both a Qualified Mental Health/Substance Use Professional with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Criminal Justice and two master’s degree in Human Services Counseling and Human Service and Psychology respectively from Liberty University. Chris is currently working on becoming a certified School Suicide Prevention Specialist (colleges and universities) through the American Association of Suicidology
